Our Mission

Southern California is in the grip of a major drought, yet urban areas throughout the region “throw away” vast quantities of stormwater runoff by letting it flow to the ocean. UCSI is a multidisciplinary team of senior, mid-career, and early-career researchers from across the five southern UC campuses joining forces to catalyze a revolution in the form and function of urban stormwater infrastructure in Southern California and beyond, transforming it from a leading cause of environmental degradation into a multi-functional green system that augments urban water supply, protects human and ecosystem health, minimizes flood risk, and ensures public safety.

2017 Annual Report: “Fighting Drought with Stormwater”

Overview.  Over the past year the MRPI team has met on a near weekly basis to develop coordinated field and research activities, participated in two all-hands-on-deck conferences (one at UCR and one at UCI), and carried out field tours of campus storm water infrastructure at UCSB and UCSD. The planning conferences and weekly meetings allowed …

UCSI Travels to UC Santa Barbara to Inventory Natural Treatment Systems

A team of MRPI undergraduates, graduate students, post-docs, and faculty converged on UCSB this week to inventory on-campus natural treatment systems. We were really impressed by the scale of the systems, and how well they are integrated into the natural landscape. A big thank you to Professor Trish Holden and UCSB graduate students Marina Feraud …
